Children and Digital Media in Early Childhood Education
Introducing digital media to preschoolers involves making the experience enjoyable, creative, and informative. The first step is to choose appropriate technology and ensure that it complements other forms of play. I would start by allowing children to experiment with simple apps or tools that promote creativity, such as digital drawing or story-making programs, technology that can be used for education rather than entertainment. Encouraging children to use digital media for creativity rather than consumption is an excellent first step.
What is media education and media literacy?
Media education wants to teach children how to deal with media responsibly and carefully. It is not only about using technology but also about helping children understand what they see and hear. For example, helping children recognize that some material is teaching them to think critically about what they watch or play. Media literacy extends this. It is the ability to view, assess, and produce media content.
How can you teach media literacy in early childhood education?
Teaching media literacy in preschool should be enjoyable and physical. According to the Finnish National Core Curriculum, activities should promote creativity and critical thinking in a playful manner. For example, after seeing a short film, I would ask the kids what they liked or disliked about it and why. This allows kids to think about what they are seeing. Another approach is to let the children construct their own stories using basic apps or digital tools. This provides children with how media is made and what it is used for. Even simple activities like taking pictures or drawing on tablets can teach students how to create and think about media.
There are several innovative methods for using digital media in daycare. There is digital storytelling, which allows children to create their own stories using apps such as Book Creator. This allows kids to explore both text and images while understanding how digital media works. Another hobby is digital imaging, which involves children taking images of things that interest them. Then you can look at what they have recorded and how photographs might communicate stories.
I believe activities that encourage creativity and critical thinking. One basic idea is interactive digital play, that children can utilize tasks to create paintings, simple animations, or even short videos. I would also use role play with digital devices, such as cameras or tablets, to help children understand. For instance, they may play to be photographers and tell a story or record moments throughout the day. Another activity could be group talks after seeing a brief film or playing an educational game. Asking questions like (What did you like about it? or What did you learn?).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital media in preschool?
The advantages of digital media in preschool are increased creativity, improved engagement with technology, and more active learning. And digital technologies can help students acquire critical abilities such as problem-solving, language development, and even social skills. On the Other Hand, there are disadvantages. Excessive use of digital media can impact health activities, social connections, and the growth of attention skills. Not every type of media is suitable for young kids, so it is important to monitor their involvement. Additionally, if children dedicate excessive hours to screens, they may miss out on valuable face-to-face interactions that support their development.

Interactive talks, and sharing thoughts and opinions on digital media would greatly enhance critical thinking ability.
