Children and Digital Media - Navigating Digital Media in Early Childhood
Children who are born into a technocratic society face a new challenge as they are constantly exposed to insurmountable amounts of information through digital media. As technology continues to explore all aspects of life including, education, and entertainment, it is crucial to ensure that children are guided safely to navigate through digital space and advocate their well-being at the same time.
This blog post will explore how to support children’s first steps in digital media, teach media literacy, and integrate digital learning into early childhood education (ECE) settings.
Helping Children with Their First Steps in Digital Media in Preschool
Introducing digital media literacy to preschoolers should be implemented with a structured approach and healthy learning habits. Selecting age-appropriate content, setting time limits, teaching critical thinking using memory games as mentioned in the Group 03 discussion, and creative approach for healthy digital habits. Integrating Media Literacy
Media literacy can be defined as the ability to think critically and use digital tools. This equips children to make informed choices in freedom of expression, equality, access to information, and positive decisions.
Teaching Media Literacy in ECE and Preschool
It is vital that ECE educators guide children in distinguishing between fantasy and reality, and provide thought provoking questions to elevate critical thinking. While engaging them in content creating, it is important to encourage children to express their emotions and feelings towards digital content they consume.
ECE could incorporate digital media to engage children in coloring activities, games, interactive storytelling, music, and physical movements.
In addition to ECE, Preschools could incorporate digital media to take virtual tours around the world in the comfort of the classroom, interactive science experiments, content creating related to projects, language development, and encouraging children to create digital art.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Enhanced skill development and access to information are two major advantages of engaging digital media in early childhood. Yet, it is significant that ECE educators, parents, and guardians being aware of the impact of excessive screen time could overwhelm the sensors, cause changes in behavior, prevent them from actively participating in outdoor activities and human interaction.
Therefore, balanced approach of traditional play with human interaction and digital literacy is the key for child's well being and health.
