Social Workers integrating Social Media to reach the Youth
Social media is essential in young people's lives, and utilizing it as a tool for social workers and educators to engage those aged 13 to 25 allows professionals to address issues like mental health, substance abuse, and bullying. Proceeding with a creative approach to reach youth where they mostly dwell: Social Media would foster awareness of mental health initiatives that are helping them to navigate through substance abuse and addiction.
The Finnish Red Cross (Suomen Punainen Risti) has taken an innovative step to reach the youth who struggle with anxiety, depression, and stress. They introduced the virtual influencer Myrsky on Instagram. The primary objective is to ensure that the youth feel heard, seen, and supported without judgment. They believe this AI approach would create non-judgmental conversations. This creative approach created by Bob The Robot has proven how organizations can adapt to digital trends to reach the youth where they are most comfortable.
Adjusting the strategies according to the characteristics of different platforms would enable effective engagement with the youth.
Choosing the right platform(s) - TikTok for short but engaging and educational videos, YouTube for longer, informative, and elaborative explanations, Instagram for visual storytelling through stories and photographs, Reddit/Discord for one-on-one engagements, and discussion threads.
Creating relatable content - Encouraging through real-life stories and influential figures to bring the message to the targeted audience.
Engaging in two-way communication - Responding to the comments, requests, and suggestions, and holding live Q&A sessions
These are strategies that could be implemented in initiating a youth-oriented digital media campaign that addresses the above-mentioned issues.
Addressing Bullying Through Social Media
Instagram & TikTok Campaigns: Use popular influencers to start anti-bullying challenges and awareness campaigns.
YouTube Educational Series: Create content where social workers, victims, and former bullies share their stories and solutions.
Discord/Reddit/Facebook Groups: Establish safe online communities where youth can receive support and guidance from professionals.
WhatsApp Hotlines: Offer direct communication channels for victims to reach out for help discreetly.
This is a brilliant way to meet young people where they are and provide support for mental health and bullying in a non-judgmental way!
