Elderly People Using Digital Media
The adoption of digital media among seniors has been increasing. For instance, in Finland, the use of digital media among people over 70 has been steadily increasing. In 2020, about 51% of Finns aged 75 to 89 used the internet. Among this age group, 19% engaged with social network services, and 30% used the internet several times a day. A growing trend of digital engagement among the elderly, although there is still room for improvement in bridging the digital divide.
Many older people struggle with digital literacy or do not have access to the technology, which can leave them feeling isolated. When they cannot use the internet or social media, it can create a sense of being left out of the larger community. It is something I have read about in studies, where seniors experience social exclusion if they are cut off from digital tools.
On the other side, those who are digitally connected tend to have better health and well-being. When seniors are able to access health information and stay socially connected, it makes a big difference to their quality of life.
Digital Services for Seniors:
A lot of online services have emerged specifically for seniors, aiming to make their digital lives easier and more enriching. One example is the "Senior Connect" program, which focuses on helping older adults become more tech-savvy and ensuring they have access to the tools they need. It is great because it is not just about giving them a device, it is about teaching them how to use it to connect with others and access services.
Seniors’ Attitudes Towards Digital Services:
While I cannot conduct a personal interview, I have looked into some research on how seniors feel about using digital services. It seems that their comfort level with technology often comes down to their confidence and how they perceive their own ability to use it. When seniors feel supported, and their anxiety around technology is reduced, they are much more likely to engage. This is something studies have highlighted, showing that building up their confidence and helping them navigate digital spaces can make a huge difference in their lives.
In Nepal, digital adoption among seniors is still slow, but it is growing. Access to devices and digital literacy are still challenges, but there are initiatives in place that are helping older adults learn and become more connected. It is encouraging to see progress, even if it is a bit slow.
