Seniors in SoMe
Seniors an social media is in my opinion great tool but there is great risk beneath.
Seniors in my opinion need more counselling and guidance with social media than children. Children have been growing in to it, elderly people does not. Let's see those romance cons and other conning, usually the conned one is a bit older citizen than a young one.
For example my grandparents; one of them did use whatsapp for a long while, now she is in the condition that she can't. BUt it did bring family closer. She didn't use email. Then other set of grandparents, they use laptop daily, emails and succesfully do things with laptop, same don't go with phone. There's been multiple tries in their email to get conned. I'm sure if my Nana lived alone, she would so be conned. She will trust easily, click the links etc. But at this point, she's been safe. I've tried to teach her to use Whatsapp but that is definetly not going well. Ever, so phone calls it is.
About my Nana and social media, she don't have Facebook etc. but her friends do have. There's been a few incidents where they have been tagging my mom as my Nana. I see this hilarious but my mom not so much. As I was discussing, she didn't like that everything goes to social platform. Or that at least services should be in both to be decided from clients preferences.
Based on my own experience, there are elderly people outside social media. There is courses, information etc. in social media about activities. So not everyone finds the information. After corona, information about my Nana's hobbies went to social media and web pages, so she doesn't find it, not easily versus when it was at a clipboard in a market.
As an article says, it is an equality question to teach media to elderly people. At a corona time, social media usage did rise among elderly people. -Ikäihmisten mediakasvatus on yhdenvertaisuuskysymys - Voima

ReplyDeleteI Absolutely agree with you that seniors need guidance on their use of social media. I also find if hilarious that your grandma's friends tag your mom, thinking she's your grandma.
ReplyDeleteI have heard from a lot of places that the usage of social media rise during corona. I think that proves how useful social media can be.
