Social media can be both good and bad for adults dealing with mental health issues. In this blog I have explored the role of social media in mental health adult social work. I have chosen to highlight examples like MIELI ry and Mielenterveyden keskusliitto (MTKL). Both of these examples use a lot of different social media platforms for their advantage. Social media platforms like: X, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Mieli ry has a lot of different types of content on their social media pages. In YouTube they have shared videos where professionals talk about different topics. They have also advertised themselves on YouTube by making shorter videos that have a powerful message. This creates a lot of discussion and awareness for mental health issues. Mieli ry also provides resources and information for those in need of them. Mieli ry posting publicly about mental health also can encourage people to share their own stories on social media and this can lead to more open and accepting environment.
Like Mieli ry, MTKL uses their social media for informing about mental health and of mental health resources. Social media is also a great way to share information about mental health services and resources. For example, MTKL uses its social media accounts to let people know about upcoming events, workshops, support groups and courses. Social media allows individuals to join groups and communities where they can share their experiences and receive support from others who understand their struggles. By posting about these groups, a larger audience can be reached, as a significant amount of people nowadays uses social media platforms. Example of MTKL Instagram post.
By understanding and knowing how to use social media, social workers can enhance their practice and better support their clients. As well as bringing more discussion and awareness for their organizations and work. Organizations like MIELI ry and MTKL are excellent examples of using social media to promote mental health and provide valuable resources to those in need. Social media helps people who work in mental health organizations to talk about important issues and challenge prejudices. This way, they can influence how people view and think about mental health. By using social media wisely as a tool, they can make a bigger difference and create positive changes in the community.
This blog beautifully showcases how MIELI ry and MTKL use social media to promote mental health awareness, share valuable resources, and create supportive communities.

How can you help children with the first steps in digital media in preschool? Introducing digital media to preschoolers involves making the experience enjoyable, creative, and informative. The first step is to choose appropriate technology and ensure that it complements other forms of play. I would start by allowing children to experiment with simple apps or tools that promote creativity, such as digital drawing or story-making programs, technology that can be used for education rather than entertainment. Encouraging children to use digital media for creativity rather than consumption is an excellent first step. What is media education and media literacy? Media education wants to teach children how to deal with media responsibly and carefully. It is not only about using technology but also about helping children understand what they see and hear. For example, helping children recognize that some material is teaching them to think critically about what they watch or play. Med...
