When I worked at Nepal Mediciti Hospital, used WhatsApp as the primary tool for communication, serving several purposes such as 

  1. Day-to-Day Communication: WhatsApp groups were created for different departments and shifts to share updates and discuss urgent issues.

  2. Work Shifts and Scheduling: WhatsApp helped to communicate shift changes, schedules, and urgent updates about work hours.

  3. Information Sharing: Patient progress, medical updates, and emergency alerts were shared quickly through WhatsApp to ensure timely responses.

Formal and Informal Channels

  • Formal Channels: For official notices and patient records, email and hospital management software were used, though less frequently for daily communication.

  • Informal Channels: WhatsApp served as the main informal tool for quick, real-time communication among staff, even outside working hours.

Social Media and Communication Strategy

  • Social Media Rules: Staff were prohibited from sharing patient information on social media to protect privacy. 

Risks of Using Social Media

  • Confidentiality Breach: There was a risk of sharing patient information unintentionally.

  • Misinformation: Incorrect medical information could spread through informal groups.

  • Distractions: Excessive chatting could distract from work, affecting patient care.

Impact of Social Media on Communication

  • Immediate Communication: WhatsApp allowed for faster responses to emergencies.

  • Interaction: Informal communication helped foster teamwork by allowing easier interactions across different staff levels.

  • Flexibility: The tool provided flexibility by enabling communication outside regular work hours.

Influence on Organizational Culture

  • Formal Culture: WhatsApp supported quick communication but didn’t replace formal channels for legal matters.

  • Informal Culture: WhatsApp promoted a collaborative, supportive atmosphere by enabling personal connections and team bonding.
